Urban Water Agenda

Porto

Why an Urban Water Agenda 2030?

"Aware of future challenges, the continuous need to meet the policy objectives of EU water legislation and the goal of improving the quality of life of its citizens, the City of Porto is strongly motivated and committed to deepen the integrated water management approach and is open to establishing exchange of knowledge with other cities in Europe. We believe that an Urban Water Agenda 2030 will help us and all EU cities to accelerate the implementation of local policies and practices in order to meet EU water policy objectives, and therefore, ensure the quality of its waters for use and prevent pollution of water in the urban context."

Filipe Araújo,  Councillor for Innovation and Environment of the City of Porto.

Porto at work | Sustainable management of the urban water cycle

Since 2006, Porto manages the entire urban water cycle via a single public company (Águas do Porto). This company serves a population of about 500,000 people per day, making use of affordable and sustainable tariffs (one of the lowest in Portuguese cities with a similar number of inhabitants) and without resorting to a bank debt. It is a sustainable company, whose operating efficiency gains - in particular the reduction of losses and energy consumption - is allowed to release equity capital to finance investments in different fields such as river restoration, storm water drainage and coastal areas (beaches) management or environmental education.

The gains obtained by reducing water losses (22,5% in approximately 3 years) allowed the city to implement and finance the innovative approach of managing the entire urban water cycle in the same company without increasing costumer’s tariffs.
