UWA2030 in 2016

It was at the beginning of 2016 that the European Commission joined forces with local governments to strengthen the implementation of their water policies and put water higher on the political agenda.

Under the leadership of the Mayor of Leeuwarden, Ferd Crone, and during the time of the Netherland’s EU presidency the first conference on Cities & Water took place. The event was hosted by the City of Leeuwarden, the Province of Fryslân and the European Commission.

As one of the outcomes of the conference, several European cities expressed their interest in creating a collaborative platform to stimulate more effective, integrated water management in cities.

Invited by DG Environment of the European Commission representatives of the cities of Barcelona and Terrassa (Spain), Bratislava (Slovakia), Panevėžys (Lithuania), Porto (Portugal), Leeuwarden (Netherlands), and Mannheim (Germany) as well as of the European Water Stewardship and two city networks, namely ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability and EUROCITIES, came together in Brussels on 19 July 2016 to have an exchange on their expectations towards an Urban Water Agenda.

Outcome of the meeting was a preliminary roadmap for the further roll out of the initiative.

25 October 2016 | Cities & Water Conference | Bratislava, Slovakia

The second Cities & Water conference was hosted by the City of Bratislava on 25 October 2016 and organised with support of the European Commission and the Ministry of Environment of the Slovak Republic, under the auspices of the Slovak Presidency of the Council of the European Union and UNESCO.

At this occasion the European Commission called for a further meeting on the Urban Water Agenda initiative that was also open to public water utilities and further stakeholders participating at the conference.

Call for tender and awarding of service contract

In December 2016 the European Commission published a Call for Tenders to establish an EU-wide consultation process for the development of a strategy for the Urban Water Agenda 2030. The ICLEI European Secretariat and EUROCITIES submitted a joint tender and were awarded the contract in February 2017.
